SCU West China Lecheng Hospital Opens in Bo’ao, Hainan Province

On November 26, the opening ceremony of Sichuan University (SCU) West China Lecheng Hospital was held in the Bo’ao Lecheng International Medical Tourism Pilot Zone, Hainan Province. It is another significant practice for SCU to contribute to building the “Healthy China”.

Fu Caixiang, Deputy Director of the Standing Committee of the Hainan Provincial People’s Congress, Wang Jinsong, President of SCU, attended the ceremony and delivered remarks. Ye Ling, Vice President of SCU, presided over this event. Zhang Huawei, Deputy Secretary-General of Hainan Provincial People’s Government, and other heads of related units participated in the ceremony.

Wang, on behalf of SCU, congratulated the open of West China Lecheng Hospital and extended heartfelt gratitude to Hainan Provincial People’s Government for its support. SCU is a “Double First-Class” university, he pointed out, while Hainan province serving as the key provincial special economic zone (SEZ) in China. Leveraging their respective advantages, both sides have jointly built the West China Lecheng Hospital, facilitating the development of “Healthy China”.

Wang stressed that SCU would further integrate resources to promote the development of West China Lecheng Hospital in line with its strategic focus of “based in Hainan, serving the country, and extending to the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI)”. The goal is to establish the hospital as a high-level international medical center and clinical research hub. Following a developmental pattern of West China medicine homogenization, SCU is committed to exploring a differentiated and internationalized path tailored to Bo’ao Lecheng. The hospital aims to become a benchmark and model for institutional, technological, pattern and managerial innovation, enhancing the quality of healthcare services in Hainan and improving the well-being of people.

In addition, SCU would leverage its strengths as a comprehensive university to enhance cooperation with the Lecheng Pilot Zone and Hainan province in talents cultivation, scientific research, as well as the transformation of research achievements. The university is committed to meeting local needs and contributing its expertise to support the development of Hainan Free Trade Port.

Fu Caixiang regarded the SCU West China Lecheng Hospital as a major milestone in the development of the health industry within the Hainan Free Trade Port. She also emphasized that the hospital serves as an important attempt for the cooperation between state-own enterprises (SOEs) and public hospitals to implement the public hospital franchising. She expressed her hope that the hospital, adhering to a people-oriented and excellence-driven medical idea, would advance the research in cutting-edge fields such as cancer treatment, biomedicine and health by relying on the robust expertise of SCU West China medicine and related policies in Lecheng. She encouraged the hospital to deliver more breakthrough scientific achievements, accelerate the production, research and development of innovative pharmaceutical and medical products, establish platforms for high-level and cutting-edge medical technology application, as well as provide first-class healthcare services to patients.

The SCU West China Lecheng Hospital features “new drugs, new products, new materials”. Built by Hainan Development Holdings Ltd., the hospital is organized and managed by West China Hospital (WCH). SCU integrated excellent medical resources of WCH, West China Second University Hospital, West China College of Stomatology and West China Fourth Hospital to support the establishment of this hospital. Covering 4,2000 m2with 200 planned beds, the hospital upholds “internationalization of innovative medical products, modernization of infrastructure, humanization of medical service, standardization of diagnosis and treatment process, smartization of operation and management”. Its strategy of innovative clinical research focuses on real world studies of medical products and evidence-based medicine (EBM). To meet diversified and multi-level healthcare needs, the hospital has developed novel treatment modes for tumor, rare diseases and stem-cell therapy.
