The polymer discipline of Sichuan University was developed on the basis of the earliest Polymer compound major (renamed Plastics Engineering major in 1954), which was established in June 1953.Professor Xu Xi, academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, is the founder of this discipline. The discipline has established teaching and research institutions such as State Key Laboratory of Polymer Materials Engineering, Polymer Research Institute, Department of Polymer Materials, Department of Polymer Materials Processing Engineering, Department of Medical Polymer Materials, experiment center of polymer science & engineering.
It is an important base for the cultivating of polymer materials and engineering professionals in China. The discipline of materials science and engineering featuring advanced polymers has been included in the list of world-class discipline construction, which ranked 30th plobally in ESl in January 2025,with a relative ranking of 0.198‰.
In the recent five years, the college has undertaken 829 national, provincial and municipal projects, including 12 national key R & D plan projects and 23 subjects, 315 National Natural Science Foundation projects (among which 35 are major/key projects), and 988 projects entrusted by enterprises. A total of 1073.35 million yuan was allocated for scientific research. The college has been recognized with 15 scientific research awards, obtained approval for 914 national patents, and published 3705 high-quality academic papers. The research foundation, research capabilities and talent cultivation have garnered recognition from peers domestically and hold international influence.
The college has one national-level high-quality course, one national-level high-quality resource-sharing course, three national-level first-class courses, and seven Sichuan provincial-level first-class courses, one advanced course in Sichuan Province, one typical case of curriculum ideological and political education in Sichuan Province. In 1956, the first textbook on polymer material processing in China was published. More than 20 textbooks have been published in total, among which 7 are national-level planned textbooks, and one has won the second prize of the first National Excellent Textbook Award. (Data as of January 2025)
As of January 2025, the college has 261 staff members, including 209 full-time faculty members, 23 laboratory technicians, 19 administrative staff, 7 student support personnel, and 4 editorial staff. Among them, there are 95 professors/researchers, 98 associate professors/associate researchers, and 7 senior engineers/senior experimentalists. The institution has 130 doctoral supervisors and 181 master's supervisors. Noteworthy individuals include 1 member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, 15 national leading talents such as recipients of the National Distinguished Young Scholars Award, 31 national young talents including recipients of the National Excellent Youth Fund, 22 academic and technical leaders in Sichuan Province, and 44 reserve candidates for academic and technical leadership positions in Sichuan Province. The undergraduate program offers a major in Polymer Materials and Engineering. This major is recognized as a national-level distinctive major, one of the first pilot majors for the "Cultivation of Excellent Engineers" initiated by the Ministry of Education, and the first polymer materials major to pass the engineering education certification. It has been selected as one of the first-batch national-level first-class undergraduate major construction projects, and boasts a national-level excellent teaching team as well as a national-level experimental teaching demonstration center for Materials Science and Engineering.
This program aims to cultivate comprehensive talents with moral, intellectual, physical, aesthetic, and labor development, capable of meeting the needs of national and local economic and social development. It adapts to the rapid advancement in science and technology in the field of national polymer materials and related areas. Graduates are expected to possess deep humanistic qualities, solid professional knowledge, a broad international perspective, strong competitiveness, innovative spirit, and entrepreneurial abilities as advanced engineering and technical professionals. They are proficient in using mathematics, natural sciences, engineering fundamentals, and specialized knowledge to analyze and solve complex engineering problems related to the synthesis, processing, and applications of polymer materials. Graduates are prepared for independent work in areas such as material and product design, production preparation, scientific research, process development, engineering design, and enterprise management in the field of polymer materials and related industries.
There are four majors for graduate students: Materials Science, Materials Processing Engineering,Biomedical engineering, and Materials Engineering. All four disciplines confer master's and doctoral degrees and have established postdoctoral research stations. Materials Science and Engineering, along with Biomedical Engineering, are key national primary disciplines, while Materials Science and Materials Processing Engineering are key national secondary disciplines. The Polymer Materials Engineering discipline is designated as a key discipline under both the "211 Project" and "985 Project".
